New Lumber
When your project needs fresh stock, we source from FSC-certified and sustainably managed forests. New doesn't have to mean wasteful.

Our recommendation is always reclaimed first. But we understand that some projects require specific certifications, uniform dimensions, or species that may not be available in reclaimed stock. When new lumber is the right choice, we ensure it comes from responsible sources.
Why We Carry New Lumber
Certain applications genuinely require new lumber. Structural engineering specifications may mandate specific grade stamps that can only be applied to new, tested stock. Health department regulations for food-service environments frequently require certified new wood surfaces. Some architectural designs call for perfectly uniform dimensions and color that reclaimed stock cannot reliably provide — think a continuous run of 80 linear feet of matching crown molding, or a paneling system with tight tolerance on thickness.
Rather than sending our customers to a conventional lumberyard, we source new lumber from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified suppliers who practice selective harvesting, replanting programs, and ecosystem management. This way, even when the project calls for new, the environmental impact is minimized and full chain-of-custody documentation is available for green building certification programs including LEED, WELL, and NGBS.

Dimensional Lumber Size Chart
Lumber is sold by its nominal size but arrives at a smaller actual dimension due to drying and surfacing. Understanding actual dimensions is critical for planning layouts, ordering quantities, and matching to existing construction. The chart below covers standard softwood dimensional lumber. Hardwoods are sold in rough and surfaced thicknesses measured in quarters of an inch (4/4 = 1" rough, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4, 12/4).
| Nominal Size | Actual Size (dry) | Board Ft per Linear Ft | Common Grades | Typical Uses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1x4 | ¾" × 3½" | 0.25 BF | #2, Select | Trim, casing, shelving |
| 1x6 | ¾" × 5½" | 0.375 BF | #2, Select | Shelving, siding, trim |
| 1x8 | ¾" × 7¼" | 0.5 BF | #2, Select | Shelving, siding, paneling |
| 1x10 | ¾" × 9¼" | 0.625 BF | #2, Select | Wide shelving, wainscot |
| 1x12 | ¾" × 11¼" | 0.75 BF | #2, Select | Wide shelving, casework |
| 2x4 | 1½" × 3½" | 0.5 BF | #2, Stud, SS | Framing, blocking |
| 2x6 | 1½" × 5½" | 0.75 BF | #1, #2, SS | Framing, decking, joist |
| 2x8 | 1½" × 7¼" | 1.0 BF | #1, #2, SS | Joist, rafter, header |
| 2x10 | 1½" × 9¼" | 1.25 BF | #1, #2, SS | Floor joist, header |
| 2x12 | 1½" × 11¼" | 1.5 BF | #1, #2, SS | Heavy header, beam, stair stringer |
| 4x4 | 3½" × 3½" | 1.17 BF | #1, #2, SS | Posts, light structural |
| 4x6 | 3½" × 5½" | 1.5 BF | #1, #2, SS | Structural post, pergola |
| 6x6 | 5½" × 5½" | 2.5 BF | #1, #2, SS | Heavy post, column |
SS = Select Structural. Board feet calculated at 12" length for reference. Actual dimensions shown for kiln-dried (KD) surfaced lumber. Green (unseasoned) lumber actual dimensions may be slightly larger. All our new softwood stock is kiln-dried to 19% MC or less.
FSC Certification: What It Means & Why It Matters
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit that sets standards for responsible forest management. Their certification program involves independent third-party audits of forest operations and supply chains. Understanding what FSC certification does and does not guarantee helps you make an informed decision.
What FSC Certifies
- ✓ No harvesting from officially protected areas
- ✓ No harvesting that destroys high conservation value forests
- ✓ No conversion of natural forests to plantations
- ✓ Maintenance of water quality and quantity in harvested areas
- ✓ Fair wages and safe working conditions for forest workers
- ✓ Respect for indigenous peoples' rights
- ✓ Chain-of-custody tracking from forest to final product
FSC & Green Building Credits
FSC-certified wood products can contribute to the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization — Sourcing of Raw Materials credit. We provide the COC certificate numbers and percentages required for LEED documentation.
The National Green Building Standard awards points for FSC-certified materials. Our documentation package includes FSC project certificates suitable for NGBS submissions.
CALGreen's voluntary Tier 1 requirements include sustainable wood sourcing. We provide compliant documentation on request at no additional charge.
The GreenBoard Guarantee
Every piece of new lumber we sell comes with FSC chain-of-custody documentation, ensuring full traceability from forest to jobsite. We do not stock lumber from clear-cut operations, old-growth harvesting, or uncertified tropical sources. If you need certification documentation for LEED or other green building programs, we provide it at no additional charge.
When to Choose New vs. Reclaimed
The right answer depends on your specific project constraints. This comparison table addresses the most common decision factors our customers weigh.
| Decision Factor | Choose Reclaimed | Choose New FSC |
|---|---|---|
| Visual character | Want patina, nail holes, saw marks, age | Need uniform color and surface across the run |
| Structural grade stamps | Project allows engineering letters in lieu | Permit requires stamped grade on every piece |
| Uniformity of dimension | Tolerances of ±⅛" are acceptable | CNC/precision joinery requires consistent thickness |
| Environmental priority | Maximum diversion of waste; no new harvest | New harvest acceptable; FSC mitigation sufficient |
| Species availability | Old-growth species (Heart Pine, Chestnut, etc.) | Uniform lots of commodity species (SPF 2x4) |
| Food-contact surfaces | Consult us; some reclaimed stock is suitable | Health codes in many jurisdictions mandate new |
| Budget | Premium for character and old-growth density | Lower cost per BF for dimensional framing |
| Lead time | Usually in stock; custom lengths 1–2 weeks | In stock for commodity sizes; specialty 1–3 weeks |
| LEED credit (FSC wood) | Reclaimed can contribute to other MR credits | Direct contribution to MRc3 FSC Wood credit |
Hybrid projects are common and often the best solution. A typical residential renovation might specify reclaimed Douglas Fir beams for all exposed ceiling elements, reclaimed Heart Pine for flooring in visible areas, and FSC-certified new SPF framing lumber for all concealed structural members where grade stamps are required and appearance is irrelevant. We can quote and supply both categories from a single source, simplifying your purchasing process.
