What Is Reclaimed Lumber?
Reclaimed lumber is wood salvaged from demolished or deconstructed buildings, bridges, barns, warehouses, and other structures. Unlike new lumber from recently harvested trees, reclaimed wood has already lived one life — often 50 to 150 years — and carries the patina, density, and grain character that only time creates. The trees that produced most of our reclaimed stock grew for 100 to 300 years before being harvested, resulting in wood with 2–3 times the growth-ring density of modern plantation timber.
Our reclaimed dimensional lumber comes primarily from industrial and commercial demolitions across the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, and the intermountain West. The most common species in our inventory are Douglas Fir, Southern Yellow Pine, and Hemlock, though we regularly stock Western Red Cedar, Spruce, and occasionally old-growth Redwood. Every piece passes through our six-step reclamation process before it reaches your project.
Choosing reclaimed lumber saves approximately 2.8 lbs of CO2 per board foot compared to new lumber. For a typical 2,000 BF residential project, that is 5,600 lbs of carbon emissions avoided — equivalent to taking a car off the road for three months. Beyond the environmental benefits, reclaimed lumber is often structurally superior to modern stock thanks to its old-growth origins.
Why Builders Choose Reclaimed
Denser & Stronger
Old-growth reclaimed lumber has 16–30 growth rings per inch compared to 4–8 in modern plantation timber. This translates to higher Janka hardness, better nail-holding capacity, and superior structural performance under load.
Dimensionally Stable
After decades of natural drying, reclaimed lumber is fully equilibrated. It will not warp, twist, cup, or check after installation the way freshly kiln-dried new lumber sometimes does as residual moisture stress releases.
Unique Aesthetic
Nail holes, saw marks, weathering patterns, and natural patina create visual depth that no factory distressing can replicate. Architects and designers specify reclaimed wood precisely because each board is one of a kind.
Environmental Impact
Zero new trees harvested. Zero mill processing energy. Carbon stays locked in the wood instead of being released through landfill decomposition. LEED MR credits available for qualifying projects.
Available Sizes
We maintain a rotating inventory of all standard dimensional sizes. Note that reclaimed lumber often comes in true nominal dimensions — a reclaimed 2x4 may measure a full 2" x 4" rather than the modern 1.5" x 3.5". We can mill reclaimed stock to modern standard dimensions if your project requires matching with new lumber.
| Nominal | Actual (Modern) | Reclaimed Actual | Lengths | Species | BF/LF |

Grades
Every board is graded by our trained evaluators using a system developed specifically for reclaimed lumber. Unlike new lumber grading that penalizes character marks, our system rates both structural performance and visual character — because in reclaimed wood, the history IS the value.
Premium / Select
$$$$Minimal defects, clean faces, tight grain. Fewer than 3 nail holes per linear foot, no splits over 2 inches. Our most limited grade — only 15–20% of stock qualifies. Best for furniture, cabinetry, and high-end finish work.
#1 Grade
$$$Sound wood with minor cosmetic imperfections. Up to 6 nail holes per linear foot, small tight knots under 1.5 inches. Our most popular grade — balances quality with value. Excellent for shelving, built-ins, paneling, and semi-exposed framing.
#2 Character
$$The grade designers love. Nail holes, bolt holes, saw marks, weathering, and natural distressing give each board a unique story. Structurally sound for non-load-bearing applications. Perfect for accent walls, barn doors, rustic furniture.
Mixed / As-Is
$Unsorted mixed-grade boards at significant discount. Typical yield: 40% #1, 35% #2, 25% utility. Ideal for large projects where on-site sorting is acceptable. Minimum order: 500 BF.
Species in Our Inventory
Douglas Fir
The backbone of West Coast reclaimed stock. Warm amber tones, straight grain, exceptional strength. Old-growth specimens have extremely tight rings (16–30 per inch).
Southern Yellow Pine / Heart Pine
Dense heartwood from old-growth pines no longer commercially available. Deep amber-to-orange color, incredibly hard, and highly resinous.
Hemlock
Lighter and softer than Fir but machines well and takes stain evenly. Popular for interior paneling and trim.
Western Red Cedar
Naturally rot-resistant. Ideal for outdoor reclaimed projects — fencing, decking, siding, pergolas.
Specialty (Redwood, Oak, Walnut)
Rare species from barn demolitions, bridge replacements, and historic renovations. Individually priced, sells quickly.

Care & Finishing
Interior applications:We recommend a penetrating natural oil finish — tung oil, Danish oil, or hard-wax oil — that enhances grain and color without building up a plastic film. Apply, let soak 15–30 minutes, wipe excess, and recoat after 24 hours. Easy to maintain and spot-repair.
Exterior applications:Use a penetrating exterior sealer with UV inhibitors. Cedar and Redwood have natural rot resistance but still benefit from sealer. Douglas Fir and Pine require robust protection. Reapply every 2–3 years depending on sun exposure.
Structural / concealed: No finish needed for enclosed framing. For exposed structural beams, a clear penetrating sealer prevents dust accumulation and eases cleaning.
