Wood With a Story, Built for Your Home

Reclaimed lumber is not just a design trend. It is the only building material that carries genuine history — the grain tightened over a century of growth, the patina earned through decades of exposure, the character that no factory process can replicate. When you install reclaimed wood in your home, you are not just choosing an aesthetic. You are choosing to keep a tree that grew for a hundred years in productive use rather than sending it to a landfill.

We supply homeowners and residential contractors across Los Angeles with material that is properly processed, accurately graded, and delivered dry and ready to install. Whether you are a homeowner doing a weekend DIY accent wall or a general contractor building a custom home, we have the inventory, the milling capability, and the knowledge to make your project work.

Applications Deep Dive

Everything you need to know about each major residential application: typical board footage, lead time, installation difficulty, and key tips from our team.

Accent Walls

DIY-friendly
BF: 60–150 BFLead Time: 1–3 weeks

The most popular entry point for homeowners. A shiplap or T&G accent wall transforms a living room, bedroom, or dining room in a weekend. Typical wall (10×8 ft) requires 80–100 BF including waste. Pre-cut and pre-surfaced material from our facility makes installation straightforward with basic tools.

Installation Tips

  • Purchase all boards from the same run for color consistency
  • Acclimate boards in the room for 48–72 hours before installation
  • Leave a 1/16" gap between boards to allow for seasonal movement
  • Use a stud finder and screw through the face or use a hidden clip system

Reclaimed Flooring

Contractor recommended
BF: 110–150 BF per 100 sq ftLead Time: 3–8 weeks

Reclaimed flooring is the highest-value application per board foot and the one that most transforms the feel of a home. Proper installation requires the floor to be within 2% relative humidity variance of the room's year-round average — which in LA is typically 35–55% RH. Our kiln-dried flooring arrives at 6–9% MC, suitable for immediate acclimation.

Installation Tips

  • Hire a flooring contractor familiar with reclaimed material
  • Test subfloor flatness: should be within 3/16" over 10 feet
  • Allow 5–7 days of on-site acclimation before installation
  • Specify penetrating oil or hardwax oil finish — avoid polyurethane on character-grade material

Kitchen Islands

Contractor recommended
BF: 15–30 BFLead Time: 2–4 weeks

A reclaimed wood island top is a focal point that cannot be replicated with any new material. We produce edge-glued panels in any size, with finished edges (straight, eased, beveled, or live-edge). Island tops require stable, well-dried wood — we deliver at ≤8% MC for this application. Specify a food-safe penetrating oil (not urethane film) for the best long-term performance.

Installation Tips

  • Size island top to overhang base cabinet by 1½" on seating sides
  • Order 10% wider and longer than finished size to allow for final trimming
  • Apply a quality food-safe oil before installation, then again 30 days after
  • Re-oil annually to maintain protection in kitchen environment

Fireplace Mantels

Professional installation required
BF: 10–25 BFLead Time: 1–3 weeks

A reclaimed timber mantel shelf is one of the highest-impact, lowest-board-foot applications we offer. A single 4×8 or 6×8 timber at 5–6 feet long is enough for a shelf mantel. We can smooth-surface the top and front while leaving saw marks on the back and bottom for an authentic look. For surround mantels (shelf + legs + header), budget 15–25 BF in matching timber.

Installation Tips

  • Mantel shelf must be minimum 12" above fireplace opening per most fire codes
  • Specify kiln-dried timber at ≤12% MC to prevent cracking after installation
  • Floating timber shelf requires two lag bolts or steel pins into structural wall
  • Live-edge timber mantels must be sealed on all end grain to slow checking

Outdoor Decking

Contractor recommended
BF: 240–300 BF per 100 sq ftLead Time: 2–5 weeks

Reclaimed Cedar and Redwood are the best-performing species for Los Angeles-area exterior decks due to their natural rot resistance and ability to be left unfinished or finished with UV-stable penetrating oil. Reclaimed deck boards require slightly more inspection for nail holes, splits, and checks than new material — we pre-grade all deck stock and reject boards with structural defects.

Installation Tips

  • Space deck boards ⅛" apart for drainage and air circulation
  • Pre-drill all screw holes in reclaimed material to avoid splitting
  • Apply a UV-stable penetrating oil within 30 days of installation
  • Expect seasonal gapping in winter/spring in LA due to higher moisture

Custom Furniture

Professional required
BF: 20–80 BFLead Time: 2–6 weeks

Reclaimed lumber — particularly wide planks of Douglas Fir, White Oak, and Heart Pine — is ideal for custom dining tables, coffee tables, benches, and headboards. We supply S4S dimensional stock or edge-glued panels for furniture makers. Our custom milling service can produce specific thicknesses (1", 1½", 2", 3", 4") and widths to your furniture maker's specifications.

Installation Tips

  • Specify dry material (≤8% MC) for furniture joints to remain tight over time
  • Live-edge slabs require 2–4 weeks additional lead time for bookmatched pairs
  • Dining table tops need a bread-board end or floating fastener system to allow seasonal movement
  • Match grain direction between edge-glued planks for the cleanest look

Budget Planning for Residential Projects

Material costs vary by species, grade, and profile. The table below uses our mid-range pricing ($5–$12/BF for softwoods, $8–$18/BF for hardwoods) to give you a realistic planning range. Add labor costs separately based on your contractor's rates.

ProjectBoard FeetMaterial Cost
Small accent wall (8×8 ft, shiplap)65–80 BF$390–$960
Large feature wall (14×9 ft)120–150 BF$720–$2,700
Small bedroom floor (150 sq ft)165–195 BF$990–$3,120
Main living area floor (400 sq ft)440–520 BF$2,640–$9,360
Kitchen island top (3×6 ft)12–18 BF$144–$396
Fireplace mantel (shelf only)8–15 BF$80–$300
Deck (200 sq ft, Cedar)240–280 BF$1,200–$2,800
Fence (50 LF, 6 ft tall)190–230 BF$950–$2,300
Dining table top (4×8 ft)22–30 BF$220–$600
Outdoor pergola (12×12 ft)180–260 BF$900–$2,600

Budget by Species Tier

Softwoods (Douglas Fir, Cedar): $5–$10/BF. Mid-hardwoods (Heart Pine, Elm): $8–$14/BF. Premium hardwoods (White Oak, Maple, Walnut): $12–$22/BF. Old-growth material adds 20–40% to these ranges.

Include Milling in Your Budget

Rough-sawn material costs less but requires milling ($0.50–$2.00/BF) for flooring, T&G, or custom profiles. Pre-milled S4S and T&G stock costs more per BF but is ready to install, saving labor.

Order 15% Extra

Always add a 15% waste and acclimation buffer to your calculated board footage. Running short mid-project and trying to match material from a different batch is the most common and costly mistake in reclaimed wood work.

Working With Contractors

Whether you are a homeowner hiring a contractor or a contractor building your client base, here is how we work with the residential trade.

Ordering as a Contractor

Residential contractors who work with GreenBoard Reclaimed on multiple projects per year qualify for our Trade Partner pricing (10–15% below retail) and Net-30 payment terms. We accept contractor purchase orders and provide itemized invoices suitable for project billing. Contact us to establish a trade account.

Supplying to Your Clients

Many contractors purchase material directly and mark it up as part of their material package. We provide contractor-friendly invoices without retail pricing, so you can present your own pricing to your client. We also offer white-label material quotes where you present the specs and we coordinate directly as your sub-supplier.

Jobsite Delivery

We deliver to residential jobsites across Greater Los Angeles with our own fleet. Deliveries include forklift placement for palletized material, proper strapping and cover protection, and delivery confirmation documentation. We work around your schedule — early morning, weekend, and staggered deliveries are available with advance scheduling.

Technical Support

Our team answers contractor technical questions about moisture content, installation methods, finishing recommendations, and wood movement. We are available by phone and email, and our sales team has hands-on installation experience. We can also make site visits for large or complex projects in the LA area.

For Homeowners: What to Tell Your Contractor

We are sourcing reclaimed lumber from GreenBoard Reclaimed — ask for the moisture reading and grade report at delivery.
Require a 5–7 day on-site acclimation period for flooring material before installation begins.
Specify penetrating oil or hardwax oil finishes for reclaimed flooring — not polyurethane film.
Pre-drill all face-nail holes in reclaimed material; it is denser than new lumber and will split if nailed without piloting.
Do not store reclaimed lumber directly on concrete. Use stickers (blocking) to allow air circulation under the stack.
If any boards arrive with moisture content above 10%, contact us before installation — we will exchange or credit the affected material.

Planning Tip for Homeowners

For a typical residential project (accent wall or flooring up to 500 sq ft), plan on 3–6 weeks from initial contact to installation-ready material. If you have a hard deadline (contractor start date, holiday timeline, permit window), contact us as early as possible so we can schedule your processing and delivery to hit your target. We cannot rush kiln drying — stable moisture content takes the time it takes.

Common Questions from Homeowners

Is reclaimed lumber safe for indoor use?

Yes, when properly processed. Our material is de-nailed, cleaned, kiln-dried, and tested for moisture content. Pre-1978 material is tested for lead paint; any painted boards are disclosed at point of sale.

Can I use reclaimed lumber in my bathroom?

Yes, above the tile line and away from direct water contact. Specify Cedar or Teak for best moisture resistance. Always use a penetrating oil or marine-grade finish and ensure the space has adequate ventilation.

Does reclaimed wood require special tools or skills?

It is denser than modern lumber, so sharp blades and bits are essential. Pre-drilling prevents splitting. Character-grade material may have occasional hard spots (knots, embedded metal residue) that require carbide-tipped blades.

How do I match the color of existing reclaimed wood?

Bring a sample to our Commerce, CA yard for in-person matching, or send us a high-resolution photo. We can usually find a close match within our current inventory. Exact matches are rare but close color-family matches are usually achievable.

What finish should I use on reclaimed floors?

Penetrating hardwax oil (Rubio Monocoat, Bona Craft Oil) for the most natural look and easiest repair. Avoid water-based polyurethane on character-grade material — it highlights gaps and cracks that look better with a matte oil finish.

Can I install reclaimed flooring over radiant heat?

Yes, with the right species and moisture prep. Narrow-width flooring (under 4") moves less. Deliver material at 6–8% MC and acclimate at the installation temperature for at least 7 days. Heart Pine and Maple perform best over radiant systems.
